The main campuses of James Cook University (JCU) are located in Cairns and Townsville in the tropical Queensland. JCU also has another campus in Brisbane. Student accommodation at James Cook University

  • Townsville campus

On the Townsville campus students have the choice to live on- or off-campus. Students that want to live on campus have the option to choose from the student Colleges and Halls, including George Roberts Hall, Rotary International House, Saints Catholic College, St Mark’s College, The John Flynn College, University Hall and Western Courts.

  • Cairns campus

At the Cairns campus there is no on-campus accommodation available. But the JCU Accommodation Service provides an off-campus database of housing to help students find off-campus accomodation in Cairns. 

Campus life at James Cook University 

The Townsville campus is the biggest campus of James Cook University and is located in Townsville. The campus has more than 10.000 students. This green campus is located in Douglas, close to Ross River and on 13 km of the city centre. 

The Brisbane campus of JCU is a modern campus and is located in the city centre on walking distance of many shops, restaurants and bars. 

The Cairns campus of James Cook University is situated near the northern beaches in the suburb of Smithfield. The campus itself is located a 15 kilometres (9 miles) north of the city centre, surrounded on three sides by rainforest-covered mountains.

A the start of each Study Period campus tours are being organised in the Orientation Week by the university, so students get introduced to  The Cairns campus has state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities, located in the most amazing settings. 

What can I do when I don't study?

Being a student at James Cook University is about more than just attending lectures. It is all about meeting new people, having fun and developing skills. Throughout the year, there are many events and activities organised at JCU. So make sure to check the calender regularly. Transportation

Getting to and around campus is an everyday issue for all students at James Cook University. Sunbus provides a regular bus service to and from the campus, city and suburbs in both Townsville and Cairns. You can get all information and timetables at the Student Association or visit the Sunbus website.

Full-time students at James cook University can also apply for a Tertiary Transport Card which offers discount on public transport in Queensland. 

A great idea to save some money and help the environment too, is to bike to campus. Students that live on-campus have the option to participate in TropEco's bike sharing program, through which they can rent bicycles for free on a daily basis.
