In 1919, UCLA became the second campus founded in the University of California system. Since then, UCLA has grown into a world-renowned research university and an athletic powerhouse. Throughout its existence, this university has produced Nobel Prize Winners, Guggenheim Fellows, National Academy of Sciences Members, accomplished artists, musicians, and Olympians. Therefore, it is no wonder that UCLA is the most applied-to school in the United States. As an international student, you have the opportunity to take courses through UCLA Extension or the College of Letters and Science.

Why study at the University of California, Los Angeles Extension (UNEX)?

UCLA Extension offers full certificate programs in a number of specialized fields and topics, such as Marketing, Engineering, Finance, and Screenwriting. Many of these certificate programs include an internship, which offers the perfect combination between a proper academic background and valuable work experience. This specialized knowledge and training in a given field not only enhances a CV, but also prepares students for continuing education or the workforce.

If you do not wish to complete a full certificate program, you also have the option to study abroad for one or two semesters. As a study abroad student, you can take courses from either UCLA Extension, the UCLA College of Letters and Science, or both. In doing so, you may be able to transfer the completed credits to your home university with prior permission.

Most recently, UCLA ranked 37th in the QS World University Rankings (2014), 8th in its Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings (2013) and 12th in the Academic Ranking of World Universities by Shanghai Jiao Tong (2014).

Main Areas of Study

Through UCLA Extension, students can earn certificates in a range of specialties, including, but not limited to, Architecture and Interior Design, Design and Communication Arts, Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, International Trade and Commerce, Marketing, Music Production, Real Estate, Journalism, Cinematography, Film Scoring, and Sustainability. Within the College of Letters and Science, students can enroll in a variety of courses in the humanities, social sciences, and hard sciences, as long as they meet the pre-requisites for the specific courses. Please note that courses in Economics and Psychology are limited, as they are already in high demand for existing students.

Academic calendar: UCLA operates on the quarter system, meaning that the academic year is divided into terms corresponding with Fall, Winter, Spring, and, if necessary, Summer. Each academic term, minus the summer term, lasts eleven weeks (ten weeks of class, one week of exams). UCLA Extension also operates on the quarter system with roughly the same timeline.
